Shoes without feet. Illustration Friday

I was always remarking on these single shoes on the roadside. Then I found this wonderful poem by Antonia Hollander of Reluctant Painter.

Hi Margaret,
This reminds me of a long running, very funny, episode on Wogan on Radio 2 concerning Compo's wellies!
There was a similar on a year or two later about abandoned old mattresses! I seem to have got out of the habit of listening to Wogan now that I no longer travel to work... used to be the highlight of my day!

Well gosh! I'm so surprised. What a nice thing you've done. When I get back from my trip, I'll post it. Also, beautiful images here.

This illo is so mysterious and interesting, what is the answer to your question-I don't know, unless perhaps it's because everyone just about wears shoes, most of us misplace or lose shoes somewhere along the way-too much a part of each psyche to be exotic or noteworthy? LOVE THE CREATIVE ILLO YOU HAVE.

not to seem caught up on the lone shoe thing but...

i see them too. when i first saw one while driving i thought of a dream i had when i was very young -
i was with my parents and my younger brother, we were leaving a restaurant late at night when my brother just disappeared leaving behind only one shoe. i made a vow to always watch over him when we were in parking lots after that. now we're older and he's still here so i guess i did a good job of being his keeper. ^_^

so now that I'm older I try to rationalize why a shoe would be left alone by thinking to myself, "hmmm. i guess someone was moving and perhaps overloaded their pick-up truck, stopped or started too quick or made a sudden stop or turn. that would explain a shoe left alone on the roadside." but after seeing another, and another and yet another, well that creepy feeling i had in my dream comes over me wondering what really goes on with someone losing only one shoe. I shun the lingering thoughts and move on with my life but never forgetting
that dream i had.

i'm sure the owner's of the lone shoes just didn't want their old stinky shoe anymore and wanted to throw it away! right? thanks for sharing this! i'm glad to know others notice the lone shoes! ^_^
